Art and Earth Friendly
Grand Rapids Art Museum
The GRAM is the first newly constructed LEED certified art museum in the world and is expected to receive a LEED gold rating from the USGBC. This is not an easy accomplishment for an art museum, due to the delicate nature of the artwork.
- The museum lighting is 70% natural through windows and skylights which are filtered, layered and fitted with adjustable louvers to control temperature and protect the artwork.
- Rain and melted snow are collected and recycled for toilets and plant irrigation, reducing the demand for city-treated water by 20%.
- White oak from sustainably harvested forests certified by the Forest Stewardship Council is used for the gallery flooring.
- The carpeting is comprised from digestible corn based plastic.
- Many of the museum’s building materials were sourced locally from West Michigan.
