Become a part of Monarch butterfly preservation by creating a Monarch Waystation in your garden or landscape…

Winter is a great time to begin planning a Monarch Waystation. Waystations provide necessary habitat for Monarch butterflies to reproduce in the spring/summer and provide nectar sources in late summer/fall so that these butterflies have enough energy stored to make their long migration to Mexico in the fall.

Even small gardens or landscapes are suitable for Monarch Waystations as long as milkweed is provided along with some annual or perennial nectar sources such as Lantana, Verbena, Zinnia, Coneflowers, Joe Pye Weed and/or Blanket Flowers.

A must read article Native Plants & Wildlife Gardens: Milkweed for Monarchs, provides several resources for choosing suitable milkweeds for Monarchs by geographical region. It is important to understand that only a small percentage of milkweed species are suitable for Monarchs as a host plant and that these suitable species be native to your region.

Several websites promote growing exotic milkweeds that are native to other countries, such as balloonplant. These plants can become invasive, having a negative impact on our native environments. It is important to do your homework before planting milkweed or any other plants & trees in your garden or landscape!
